The Cobras shipped three half goals as defensive errors proved costly against Staveley Miners Welfare.

Andy Francis made a good low save early on to deny Staveley’s Adam Lee. At the other end Tim Gregory put a shot wide after being put in by Ryan Hawley.

Clipstone then enjoyed a period of possession but were unable to trouble Lewis Naylor in the home goal. This proved costly when Tyla Bell beat the offside trap and rounded Andy Francis to score for the home side on 20 minutes. The same player then took advantage of a defensive slip to double Staveley’s lead after 23 minutes.

The home side grabbed a third on the stroke of half time when a ball into the area was punched clear by Francis straight to Andrew Fox who chipped the ball into an unguarded net from just outside the penalty area. Half Time 3-0

The Cobras did better in the second period and held their own although their only shot on target came when a corner in the 81st minute fell to Rob Paling who shot straight at Naylor.

At the other end Francis produced another save late on to deny Bell his hat-trick. Full Time 3-0

Cobras’ boss Ian Cotton was honest in his after-match appraisal: “Up to half time we made three errors and they scored three goals. We haven’t played terrible but three individual errors have meant that the game was pretty much over at half time. We asked the players to just go out and enjoy the second half”. I thought we did really well to keep it to 0-0 in the second half”.

The manager was also looking ahead to the summer and next season. “We’ll give everybody an opportunity pre-season and we’ll try and pick up some players as well. I’m looking forward to it”.

So Clipstone finish a turbulent season in16th place with 49 points from 42 matches.
