Another bad day at the office for Clipstone who have now lost all nine of their league games. Manager Ian Cotton had another selection headache when first teamers Gareth Curtis & Jermaine Jatau have moved onto pastures new.
The worst possible start for Clipstone happened in the 4th minute. Athersley win two corners in quick succession. The Cobras fail to clear the second and the visitor’s centre forward Steven Bennett opens the scoring with a close-range shot. 0-1
The Cobras battled well for the next half an hour, often first to the loose ball, but didn’t create any clear-cut chances.
Just before the half hour Athersley’s Tony Bennett beat several challenges but blasts wide when well-placed, failing to trouble Liam Kerry in the Clipstone goal.
Athersley took momentum from the last chance and after 33 minutes Clipstone keeper Kerry is beaten for the second time when Bennett beats the home side’s offside trap and confidently places his shot past Kerry. 0-2
The second half offered little goal mouth action at either end. Athersley did try to take limited opportunities and Lee Garside found himself offside after slotting home in the 60th minute.
The Cobras finally created a half chance in the 70th minute when a typical Ben Burbanks run down the right wing finishes with a cross to substitute Jack Whitehouse. The young forward is tackled when poised to shoot and the chance of a shot on goal is lost.
8 minutes later the Cobras found themselves with another chance this time through new signing Adam Barratt who fires wide after good work by the ever energetic Jack Hutchinson.
Four minutes from time, Athersley break quickly and are only denied by a good save from keeper Kerry to deny McCauley Shillitto. However from the resulting corner Shillitto is first to react and fires home the loose ball from close-range. 0-3
Leading by example the Cobras captain Ben Rogers caps his best performance of the season with a good run beating several challenges but is dispossessed inside the area before he can trouble Jordan Greaves in the visitors’ goal.
Final score 0-3
