Clipstone now face a replay on Tuesday night against Barton Town from the Northern Counties East Premier League after a goalless game. However this was a much improved performance against opponents who play one step higher in the non-league pyramid after Tuesday nights 4-0 home defeat to Clifton All Whites.
Indeed the Cobras had a goal Tom Moult incorrectly disallowed by in the 34th minute. Barton’s ‘keeper Nathan Popple was attempting to throw the ball overarm when he collided with one of his own players. The loose ball fell to Moult who took his chance well. However referee Josh Bramall mistakenly thought that a Cobras’ player had got in the goalkeepers way.
Otherwise this was a game of few chances. The Cobras’ Tim Gregory shot over after being set up by Steve Sowter in the 10th minute and Barton’s Donald Chimalilo had his sides best chance of the first half in the 28th minute but Charlie Taylor saw the danger and blocked the striker’s effort.
In the second half Gregory again had the Cobras’ best chance and fired over in the 58th minute after being found by a great crossfield ball from Sowter.
At the other end Tom Bennett shot wide of an unprotected goal after Gavin Saxby’s punched clearance landed at his feet.
The visitors dominated the last ten minutes as the home side tired and Saxby had to be alert to deny Chimalilo in the last minute of normal time.
