Clipstone edge Chesterfield in a game of two halves

Clipstone won their first pre-season friendly of the 2020/21 season beating Chesterfield Academy 3-2 in a game marred by the weather.

With the Cobras offering a “pay what you like” initiative for spectators the Lido Ground was pretty busy with 137 supporters. This was the first game back for most people after the news broke last week that the F.A. were allowing supporters back into grounds.

In truth Storm Francis was the real winner as both sides struggled to cope with the bad conditions. I’m sure the message from both management teams was simple. Take advantage of the wind.

No doubt Chesterfield manager Phil Tooley would have been disappointed to see Clipstone get the first goal of the game when Jack Siddall netted his first in pre-season after 8 minutes.

Although the Cobras took the lead Chesterfield enjoyed most of the possession and Clipstone struggled to clear their lines with the ball coming straight back due to the wind. The young Spireites side took a 2-1 lead into half time.

As expected with the wind behind us, Clipstone started to get a foothold in the second half and levelled through a superb header by defender Matt Leyland, getting on the end of a Jason Foster corner.

With the wind behind them and with plenty of time left the Cobras could push on for a winner and did so in the 79th minute after striker Jack Siddall got his second of the evening. A confident Siddall broke the offside trap and calmly slotted home to put Clipstone back in the lead.

The young Chesterfield side battled on bravely but Clipstone took advantage of the wind and kept pressing the academy lads forcing them to go long. The game finished 3-2 with striker Siddall the pick of the bunch for the home side.
