Match summary by Jim McIntosh:

Clipstone went out of the FA Vase at the first hurdle as they lost on penalties to Leicestershire side St Andrews from the United Counties league after the tie was level at one all after 90 minutes.

The Cobras took the lead in the 14th minute through Joe Massey who produced an excellent finish to score from a Connor Wright cross. However the home side were unable to build on their early advantage and were made to pay when St Andrews equalised in the 42nd minute through a Joe Linley free kick that took a deflection off a defender in the wall. Debutant Charlie Bryan in the home goal was unlucky to be beaten on that occasion having earlier produced a brilliant stop to keep out a close range effort from Joshua Crossley.

The second period saw both sides trying to win the game in normal time and Bryan again had to be alert to deny Mason Lopez after the forward escaped the attentions of Lewis Warwick and go round the Cobras’ stopper who got down quickly to smother the ball.

At the other end defender Dec Whitton’s effort following a corner was ruled out for offside just before the hour mark.

The home side had the best chance to win the game two minutes from time when substitute Josh Pickering’s defence splitting pass put Jack Warwick in on goal. The Cobra’s forward, who had earlier spent ten minutes in the sin bin for dissent, looked certain to add to his season’s tally of six goals, but his shot went well over the bar.

Instead the tie was decided on penalties and whilst Bryan produced a fantastic stop to keep out Joe Linley’s penalty, Ethan Blackbourn and Josh Pickering were unsuccessful with their spot kicks.

The Cobras are now at home to Retford FC on Saturday 18th September, 3pm.
