Match summary by Jim McIntosh:

Dave Hoole shuffled his pack for this crucial six-pointer against Dronfield Town with recent signing Brad Hextall starting and Jake Holt also making his first start in the centre of defence after returning to the Cobras from Corby Town.

The changes had little immediate impact in what was a forgettable first half. Joe Massey saw a shot go into the side netting in the 14th minute but the Cobras carried little attacking threat in the early stages.  Indeed, it was no surprise when the visitors took a 24th minute lead when Sam Terry beat the Cobras’ offside trap down the right hand side and crossed to Sam Bebbington who beat Sam Ogden from six yards out.

The Cobras equalised three minutes later when a long Ogden clearance reached Dec Sorrell near the area. The big striker turned and produced a great finish from the edge of the area to put his shot past Richard Henson in the visitors’ goal.

Sorrell nearly grabbed a second when he latched onto a Jake Holt through ball and his shot was spilled by Henson but there was no Cobras player on hand to get to the loose ball away.

As the first period came to a close, Dronfield’s Mark Fereday saw his shot hit the post in the 36th minute whilst a Clipstone corner on the stroke of half time led to a Dec Whitton shot being blocked before Massey fired the rebound into side netting

HT 1-1

The Cobras’ made a double substitution at the beginning of the second half with Jack Lowe and Josh Ing coming on for Josh Pickering and Brad Hextall. This had an immediate effect of giving them more attacking impetus. They took the lead on the hour mark when a Joe Massey corner found Holt whose powerful downward header gave Henson no chance.

A Massey thorough ball then played in Josh Ing who had timed his run perfectly to stay onside and whilst he managed to chip Henson his shot came back off the post. The Cobras’ third goal, which looked to have secured all three points, came in the 71st minute when Will Heather made a powerful forward run beating several players before sliding the ball into substitute Jack Lowe who scored from close range.

The home side continued to play with confidence and Ing came close again when a cross from Liam Carrington found him unmarked on the edge of the area but he was unable to find the target with his shot.

However, Clipstone failed to close the game out and allowed the visitors back into the game in the 80th minute when slack marking gave Ross Dawson a clear shooting chance.  Whilst his effort was blocked by Ogden’s legs, the rebound fell to Bebbington who smashed home the rebound from the edge of the box. Nerves seem to get the better of several of the Cobras’ players and they were made to pay in the 90th minute when a poor clearance fell to substitute Tom Gladwin who found the nest with a powerful 25-yard drive.

The Cobras remain in 14th place in the league with 15 points from 14 games. Their next game is away to Worsborough Bridge on Saturday 16th October, 3pm.
