Clipstone dug in and battled for 90 minutes to earn three points in Rudy Funk’s first game in charge. The victory, their first since late September, came courtesy of a 92nd minute header from new signing Sam O’Malley. After the game Cobras’ boss Rudy Funk professed himself “so happy for everybody concerned with Clipstone” whilst highlighting the contributions of Josh Pickering, Cameron Dear and Cobras’ man of the match, Connor Wright.

Heavy rain before the game made conditions difficult for both sides and as expected it developed into a tight match between two teams desperate for points. The visitors had an early chance when an Elliott Barnard corner clipped the top of the bar before losing skipper Mitch Mullins in the 17th minute with a nasty looking knee injury sustained in a challenge. The Cobras early efforts were then rewarded in the 20th minute when Josh Pickering went past a number of challenges and when he was tackled on the edge of the area the ball fell to Nathan Moss who curled a delightful right foot shot passed Teversal ‘keeper Michael Ball and into the far corner.

The home side responded and came more into the game and at the other end and Max Gee forced a smart save from new Clipstone ‘keeper Jason White in the 32nd minute. Teversal’s efforts were rewarded in the 45th minute after Will Heather conceded a free kick on the edge of area and former Cobra Blake Vincent stepped up to curl a sublime free kick around the wall and past White at full stretch.

HT 1-1

The second half was played in mainly driving rain making conditions very difficult for both sides. The visitors had a chance in the 49th minute after Vincent fouled O’Malley near the area, the Teversal player getting a yellow card for the challenge. The resulting free kick by Connor Wright found defender Brad Hextall who stooped to head just wide. Clipstone’s back four were mainly disciplined and well organised dealing with most things that Teversal threw at them. They were undone on the hour mark by a quick break down the right hand side but Gee, under pressure from Dec Whitton, shot well over.

The visitors were the stronger team in the final 15 minutes, creating a number of chances. Firstly, a Pickering cross found Moss at the near post but he steered the ball wide from close range. Hextall then tried his luck from from 30 yards and forced Ball to tip the ball round the post at full stretch. The winning goal eventually came two minutes into added time as a result of Cameron Dear drawing a foul on the left-hand side of the area. Pickering’s free kick picked out O’Malley at the near post and headed the ball into the goal to the delight of the Clipstone supporters in the crowd of 69.

The Cobras climb one place to 16th place in the league with 18 points from 20 games. Their next league game is another local derby away to Shirebrook Town on Saturday 18th December, 3pm.
