Match summary by Jim McIntosh:

Clipstone put in a much-improved performance following their midweek 7-0 defeat against Armthorpe Welfare but once again fell short and ultimately it was Dronfield Town who took all three points.

Rudy Funk yet again had to shuffle his pack due to player unavailability and made four changes to the team beaten at Armthorpe including the return of skipper Kofi Appiah following a one match suspension.

The first 20 minutes were fairly even with Clipstone looking more solid at the back. Cobra’s ‘keeper Charlie Preston, made the first of several good saves in the 21st minute to clear danger following a long throw. At the other end a Nathan Moss went close when his 22-yard shot narrowly missed the angle of crossbar and post.

As has so often been the case this season, Clipstone were the architects of their own downfall. Indecision at the back in the 29th minute allowed Dronfield’s Matthew Ord to intercept the ball and move in on goal before putting a low shot passed the advancing Preston. Six minutes later the Cobras’ defence was static which allowed Ord to run into the area unchallenged, exchanges passes with Connor Chapell, before firing the ball past Preston for his second goal of the game.

HT2-0

Preston was again called into action early in the second period making two good stops.  Clipstone then got a foothold in the game in the 56th minute when a Connor Wright throw in was headed on in the area by Moss and found central defender Darragh Roche who showed great technique to adjust his body shape and place a low shot past Alfie Milnes in the Dronfield goal.

Funk immediately brought on Josh Pickering, returning from a 6-week layoff due to an ankle injury, as the Cobras tried to get the all-important fourth goal. However, Preston was still kept busy denying Ord with his legs and doing well to get down low to push an Ethan Flower free past the post.   From the resulting corner, Preston then got a hand to a Samuel Bebbington header to push it onto the bar. Dronfield were finally rewarded for their efforts in the 73rd minute when Bebbington found Connor Chapell in space in the area and he fired home from close range.

To their credit Clipstone kept battling and in the 78th minute Francis Finneran beat three defenders on the edge of the area before his shot forced Milnes into a smart save. The same player was also denied by the ‘keeper in the final minute of the game.

FT 3-1

As a result of Swallownest’s 5-1 victory at Nostell MW, Clipstone now drop into the relegation places and are in 19th place with 22 points from 31 games. The Cobras next game is at home to Worsborough Bridge on Tuesday 1 March, 7.45pm.
