Match summary by Jim McIntosh:

Clipstone returned empty handed from Bourne, their longest away trip of the new 2022/3 season. The Cobras have moved sideways to the United Counties League, comprised of teams from Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire and will face several teams, such as Bourne, for the first time ever.

However there are two familiar faces in the dugout as management duo Dave Hoole and Dale Spragg have returned for their second spell at the Lido Ground.

After the game, Hoole commented that: “We didn’t deserve to win. We edged the first half and were probably the better side. The first game of the season is always a difficult one and we are coming into a new league.  I thought Bourne were the better side over 90 minutes if I’m honest.

We could have prevented the goals that they scored and we should definitely have scored more goals ourselves.

There are only a few positives from today. In patches we played some good football. Some players who needed it got 90 minutes under their belt. However, if I’m honest, we are two weeks away from being ready”.

The home side created the first chance in the 5th minute when a header from centre forward Nathan Smith hit the bar following a long throw. The Cobras then started to dominate greater possession and deservedly took the lead in the 19th minute through Will Heather who was quickest to react after a Jordan Ball headed the ball into space in the penalty area.

Chadd Wootton was then denied by an excellent finger tip save by Bourne ‘keeper John Swales who tipped his 20-yard drive over the bar.

Against the run of play, Bourne found an equaliser in the 41st minute when Jake Brown arrived late at the back post to thump the ball past Charlie Dando from 10 yards out.  The Cobras responded well to the set back and skipper Eden Homer saw his 20-yard drive just go the wrong side of the post after good work by Wootton.

HT 1-1

Clipstone had an early scare in the second half after a mix up between Dando and centre back Jordan Hagerty. However, the latter did well to get back and dispossess Smith as he tried to stroke the ball into the unguarded net from two yards out.

The home side took the lead for the first time in the game nine minutes after the break when the Clipstone defence failed to deal with a corner and allowing Josh Edmonson to head home from close range.

Clipstone then hit the woodwork as Tom Clarke’s cross from the left caught the wind and deceived Swales but unfortunately there was no Cobras’ player nearby to take advantage.

Instead it was the home side that made sure of all three points in the76th minute when Matt Cox volleyed home from a rebound after Dando did well to get down low and keep out a low shot.

FT 3-1

Clipstone’s next game is at home to Barrow Town on Saturday 6th August, 3pm.
